The Modes of Material Nature
In the material world, everything is contaminated by the three modes of material nature; goodness, passion, and ignorance. In the Bhagavad-gita, Krishna says that when the living entity comes in contact with the material nature, he gets contaminated by the material modes. It is just like rainwater. When rainwater is falling, and you save it on your rooftop, you will probably get it in its pure form. But after it hits the earth, and you have left it, it’s contaminated and muddy.
So similarly when a living entity comes in contact with material nature, he gets contaminated by the different modes. And these modes are: goodness, passion, and ignorance. The mode of goodness is superior to the mode of passion and the mode of passion is superior to the mode of ignorance.
